Doctor of Optometry


Cory Thies, Doctor of Optometry and co-owner of Beach Vision Center, an optometry corporation that has been practicing private optometry for over 33 years in Orange County and 31 years here in Los Alamitos, is Dr. Thies (pronounced “ Thees” or “Tee-ce”) or, as many of his patients call him, Dr. Cory, or just plain Cory. Any will suffice. He was raised locally in Southern California, growing up in La Mirada and later in Fullerton. He attended Optometry School at the Southern California College of Optometry, where he received a B.S. degree in optometric sciences before completing and receiving his Doctor of Optometry degree. He was a member of the Omega Delta Fraternity and the particular invite-only academic honor fraternity, Beta Sigma Kappa (B.S.K.). During the completion of his academic career, Doctor Thies did portions of his training with the United States Navy as a First Lieutenant, Second Lieutenant, and Lieutenant Commander at Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego; Marine Recruit Depot (M.C.R.D.), San Diego; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Brentwood VA Hospital (U.C.L.A.), Brentwood; Downtown VA Hospital, Los Angeles; San Bernadino Juvenile Hall, San Bernadino; Optometric Center Los Angeles (U.S.C.), Los Angeles; Fullerton Optometric Clinic (S.C.C.O.), Fullerton..


In 1986, he became part of the sports medicine community. He was the team eye doctor for the University of Southern California (U.S.C.) and the Los Angeles Raiders. During this time, he specialized in helping athletes with their visual needs and fitting contact lenses. He was instrumental in developing disposable contact lenses that collegiate and professional athletes use. He has served on multiple city and local committees, including the Chamber of Commerce and one that decided on many scholarships awarded to local high school students entering college.


Dr. Thies has participated in various clinical studies on optometry and eye-care products. He has served on various eye care boards. He belongs to multiple optometric organizations, such as the American Optometric Association (A.O.A.), California Optometric Association (C.O.A.), Charter Member Contact Lens Section of A.O.A., Sports Vision Section of A.O.A., Sports Medicine Staff at the University of Southern California, Sports Medicine Staff Los Angeles Raiders, Rio Hondo Optometric Society (RHOS), and Pacific Laser Eye Center Advisory Committee. He is active in the co-management of LASIK™ laser eye surgery and cataract surgery.



Dr. Thies was also one of the first certified optometrists in California to treat glaucoma. He and his partner were among the first to adopt and utilize the Optos digital scanning retinal laser imaging device for checking retinal health.

WAYNE JOHNSON, O.D., F.A.A.O.

Dr. Wayne Johnson graduated cum laude from the Southern California School of Optometry in 1972. He is a member of Beta Sigma Kappa’s International Honorary Fraternity in optometry and is cited as a note-worthy practitioner. Dr. Johnson was a clinical investigator for Allergen Pharmaceuticals, developing soft contact lens solutions to reduce protein buildup on contact lenses. He also served as a clinical investigator for Wesley Jessen Contact Lens Company, creating the first toric soft contact lens to correct astigmatism. In addition, he served as a clinical investigator for Dicon Instruments, developing a computerized visual field instrument to analyze peripheral and central visual field defects. In 1980, he was admitted as a fellow to the American Academy of Optometry, a privilege that fewer than 4% of his fellow optometrists attain for clinical research and expertise in optometry. He is a member of the California Optometric Association, the American Optometric Association, the American Public Health Association, and the National Eye Research Foundation.


He is a charter member of the contact lens section of the American Optometric Association and received certification in the treatment and management of ocular diseases from the International Association of Boards of Examiners in Optometry in 1993. In 2001, He received certification in treating and managing glaucoma and was listed in Who’s Who in California in 1988. Dr. Johnson has been involved in treating and co-managing cataracts and laser vision correction and has been affiliated with the Long Beach Laser Center, Pacific Laser Eye Center, The Laser Center (T.L.C.), Malony-Lusby Vision Institute, and NVision.


The Consumer Research Council of America recently listed them as among America’s top optometrists. He has served on numerous boards, was a past president of the Long Beach Optometric Association, the Rossmoor Businessman’s Association, and the Optimist Club, and was a past treasurer for the Southern California Optometric Care Council.

Currently in group practice at Beach Vision Center, Dr. Johnson has been practicing optometry in the Seal Beach, Rossmoor, and Los Alamitos areas for 53 years.
